Resilience

Project
Filipino-American Magazine

Unseen, unheard, and under-appreciated. Although the fourth largest immigrant group in the US, Filipino-Americans are considered an ‘invisible minority.’ This has led to widespread socioeconomic implications, such as racism and discrimination since colonial times. However, the worst part is that we have become complacent in order to survive. Assimilation into Western ideals brings cultural erasure in which Fil-Ams have an almost paperless history and therefore a disorienting sense of identity. Our community has a desperate need to connect-- to fill the gaps of our legacy with story.

This is an issue multiple generations need to fix, but I wanted to start somewhere. Resilience is a magazine that documents what it means to be Filipino-American through transcribed interviews, scholarly essays, comics, mind maps, and more. Illustrated and lettered to further enhance each person’s voice, this zine is a resourceful collection of POCs trying to make sense of the world and helping one another out. We mourn, we heal, we laugh, and we celebrate our unique culture, remaining resilient in the face of adversity.
